Activities at Reading Club @ BT

ACTIVITIES AT READING CLUB @ BT

Many of us believe that with globalisation and the resulting affluence, it is imperative to inculcate the value of hard work, perseverance, respect and other desirable character traits in our children. For the month of March, join us as Reading Club @ BT features activities tailored to introduce several character building traditional values to young children:

WHAT EVERY CHILD MUST KNOW

1 MAR 2008 - THREE LITTLE WOLVES AND A BIG BAD PIG (4 PM)

Children work together in sorting/ grouping activities after the story-reading, and realise that teamwork is essential for the successful completion of tasks.
For 30 children, 2 to 6 years.

5 MAR 2008 - THE POLITE ELEPHANT (10 AM)

If everyone uses the words "Please", "Thank you", "Sorry" more often, we will be a much more gracious society. Learn about the importance of manners with the well loved children's author Richard Scarry.
For 30 children, 2 to 6 years.

5 MAR 2008 - THE RABBIT AND TORTOISE (3 PM)

Hear about the disastrous consequences of being over-confident and arrogant. Nothing beats a good dose of hard work and perseverance. Children can look forward to dramatisation and video screenings.
For 30 children, 2 to 6 years.

8 MAR 2008 - GINGERBREAD MAN (4PM)

Do you wish your child takes you more seriously when you tell them not to talk to strangers? In this session, children see the consequence of trust being misplaced, and are reminded to exercise caution. Role-playing and activity worksheets reinforce this important message.
For 30 children, 2 to 6 years.

12 MAR 2008 - CRY WOLF (3 PM)

This well-known story of a boy who loves to lie serves as a grim reminder of the importance of being honest. Role-playing activities will bring the story to life and colouring activities will also be conducted.
For 30 children, 2 to 6 years.

Please register early for the sessions as availability is on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Reading Club @ BT Official Launch!!!

We are pleased to announce the official opening of the Reading Club @ BT on Saturday, 29 Mar 2008 at the Bukit Timah Community Club, 20 Toh Yi Drive.

In celebration of this event, we invite you to join us in our fun-filled activities that cater for both children and adults. These are held between 1.00 to 4.30 p.m. Among others, we will hold a Reading Competition for children born in 2002 to 2003, and a Story-telling Competition for primary school children. Each competition will feature a different theme.

Aside from reading and literacy, the launch event will also focus on family life. This will be reflected in several activities held on 29 Mar 2008, namely:

¨ a Family Amazing Race. Each team in the race will consist of a Daddy, a Mummy and a Child above 3 years old. The race consists of a series of mini-activities that each team member will be asked to perform, and the combined efforts of all members is required to complete the race. The race emphasizes the importance every member of a family plays, including the child. Goodie bags will be given to those who complete the activities in the Family Amazing Race, with additional prizes for the 3 fastest teams;

¨ bouncy castles for the young and the young at heart, a book bazaar, face-painting, magic show, and many more.

Admission is free for the launch event, but registration is required for those who wish to participate in the Reading / Story-telling Competitions and the Family Amazing Race. Registration forms for the said competitions will be available at the Reading Club. You may register at the Bukit Timah Community Club from 9 am – 9.30 pm or by fax to 64666114.

Children from PCF and Kinsland Educare learned something about batty bats today. Our volunteer Rachel gave the kids a really unforgettable lesson on those creepy mammals. There was a storytelling session followed by an art and craft session where the children got to make batty masks for themselves! Really colourful indeed...

Bukit Timah residents now have a new Reading Club at the ground floor of the Bukit Timah Community Club at 20 Toh Yi Drive. The Reading Club will provide a safe and comfortable air-conditioned environment for children aged up to 12 years old to discover the joys of learning through books, as well as provide the facilities for reading-related activities, such as story-telling, dramatizations, movie screenings and much more.
The Reading Club is a community project jointly undertaken by the Bukit Timah grassroots organisations and the PAP Community Foundation. Run entirely by volunteers, it has already gathered more than 5,000 books as the result of a local book donation drive, and is funded by donations by various sponsors, including IKEA, the National Library Board, Singapore Asian Publications and Shing Lee Publications.

As the Club is located at the CC premises, it will leverage on existing facilities and courses at the CC to broaden the range of activities open to young readers. Through participation in the Reading Club, young readers can be introduced to cultural activities such as calligraphy, tea art appreciation and toastmaster events. This is part of the long-term plan to transform the Bukit Timah CC into a cultural and heritage hub for the region.

Parents are most welcome to join the Working Committee to have a say in the activities they wish to see for their children. In this way, the Reading Club aims to enhance the spirit of active citizenry and community bonding among residents, who will take ownership over the running of the Club.

Interested volunteers may contact the Working Committee at readingclub_bt@yahoo.com.sg or call 64662912.
